Vega de Terrón sits at the confluence of the Douro and Águeda rivers, a small riverside settlement near the Spanish-Portuguese border. Its unspoiled setting of quiet streets and green landscapes belies its true role as a launch point for one of Spain's most storied cities.
Most travelers pass through en route to Salamanca, founded in Roman times and later held by Carthaginians and Moors before flourishing as a university city. Its UNESCO-listed Old Quarter is built largely from Villamayor sandstone, giving the Plaza Mayor and surrounding arcades a golden hue at sunrise and sunset. The drive inland takes roughly an hour, making the river landing a practical, low-key starting point rather than a destination for lingering.
