Sakaiminato, Japan

A working fishing port on Japan's San'in coast that opens the way to castle towns, sand dunes, and a beloved manga artist's whimsical legacy

About the Port

Sakaiminato sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula in Tottori Prefecture, where its harbor remains one of Japan's busiest fishing ports, known especially for crab landed along the San'in coast. The town is the birthplace of manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, celebrated on Mizuki Shigeru Road, a pedestrian street near the station lined with bronze statues of yokai spirits from his work.

Beyond the port, the region opens onto castle town Matsue with its preserved keep, the tranquil canals of nearby Yasugi, and the meticulously landscaped grounds of the Adachi Museum of Art. The dramatic Tottori Sand Dunes lie within reach as well, offering a striking contrast to the coastline. The historic district and yokai-themed street are an easy walk from the pier, making independent exploration simple for those who prefer to wander at their own pace.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Sakaiminato.

Stroll Mizuki Shigeru Road

Wander the pedestrian street near the station lined with over 100 bronze yokai statues from Shigeru Mizuki's manga, plus themed shops and cafes. Easily walkable from the pier in under 30 minutes.

Explore Matsue Castle

One of Japan's few original wooden keeps, this black-walled fortress offers sweeping views over Lake Shinji and the old samurai district below. Reaching Matsue from the port takes roughly an hour by train or taxi, so plan ahead.

Visit Adachi Museum of Art

Renowned for gardens considered among Japan's finest, framed like living paintings through the museum's windows alongside Japanese art collections. A worthwhile side trip inland, best arranged in advance given travel time from the coast.
