About the Port
Punta Espinoza sits at the edge of Fernandina, the youngest and most volcanically active island in the Galápagos archipelago and one of the few places on Earth never touched by introduced species. A narrow spit of jagged lava meets the shoreline here, drawing dense colonies of marine iguanas that blanket the black rock in tangled heaps. Flightless cormorants dry their stunted wings nearby, while Galápagos hawks and sea lions move about with little regard for onlookers.
Access is by panga, with a wet landing directly onto the lava shelf, and walking trails cross uneven terrain shaded by low mangroves. The setting remains largely as Charles Darwin might have found it, offering a rare, unfiltered look at evolutionary adaptation in action. Because the island has no permanent settlement, visits are brief and closely managed, making early arrival and sturdy footwear worthwhile practical considerations.

Keep eyes upward and along the rocks for hawks perched unafraid on lava outcrops and sea lions lounging or swimming just offshore, often within feet of the trail.
