Portimao

A former sardine port on the western Algarve, gateway to golden cliffs, historic Lagos, and Moorish Silves

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Portimão, the largest city in the western Algarve, built its early prosperity on sardine fishing and canning, a legacy still visible in its waterfront character. Today the old town centers on a lively riverside promenade lined with shops selling traditional lace, ceramics, and leatherwork, alongside restaurants serving the region's seafood. Nearby, the limestone cliffs and golden sands of Praia da Rocha draw visitors for their dramatic coastal scenery, while the historic core mixes 19th- and 20th-century architecture with more contemporary touches.

The city also serves as a convenient base for exploring the wider Algarve. Lagos, once a hub of Portugal's 15th-century age of exploration, and Silves, the former Moorish capital of the region, both lie within easy reach. The pier sits close to the town center, making the promenade and historic streets easily accessible on foot for those who prefer to stay close to port.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Portimao.

Relax at Praia da Rocha

One of the Algarve's most photographed beaches, framed by golden sand and dramatic limestone cliffs riddled with grottoes. A short taxi or a 20-minute walk from the pier along the promenade.

Explore Lagos' Old Town

Wander the cobbled streets and 16th-century walls of this former hub of Portugal's age of exploration, roughly 30 minutes from Portimão by car or local bus. Its marina and slave market square reveal the town's layered maritime history.

Discover Moorish Silves

Climb to the red sandstone castle that once anchored the Algarve's Moorish capital, offering sweeping views over the Arade River valley. Silves sits about 20 minutes inland and pairs well with a stroll through its old cathedral quarter.
