About the Port
Myrina, the capital of Lemnos, spreads along the island's western coast beneath the Kastro, a Byzantine fortress raised in 1186 whose ramparts trace the headland above the harbor. The old town's narrow lanes, lined with neoclassical houses, sit within easy walking distance of the pier, opening onto tavernas and a long, uncrowded shoreline. Lemnos remains an island of wild, mountainous terrain and volcanic soils that have long supported local vineyards producing distinctive red and white wines.
Beyond Myrina, the island holds some of the northern Aegean's oldest settlements, including Poliochni, among the earliest known urban sites in Europe, and the sanctuary of Kavirio, tied to ancient mystery cults. Sandy beaches stretch along much of the coastline, drawing a growing number of windsurfers, while the island's low-key character and volcanic landscape reward those who venture past its better-known neighbors.
