Mljet (Mar)

A forested Adriatic island where saltwater lakes and a national park reward those who linger over speed

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Mljet lies off the Dalmatian coast southwest of Dubrovnik, its interior blanketed in dense pine forest and cradling two interconnected saltwater lakes, Malo and Veliko Jezero. Much of this western end forms Mljet National Park, established to protect the lakes and surrounding woodland, with a small islet holding a former Benedictine monastery reachable by a short boat crossing. The island's slower pace and clear, sheltered waters have long drawn travelers seeking a contrast to busier coastal towns.

Visitors typically arrive by tender or small boat, since Mljet has no large commercial port, making advance planning for shore time worthwhile. Walking and cycling paths wind through the park along the lakeshores and into the forest, while swimming spots offer a cool respite in warmer months. The island pairs naturally with nearby Korčula, and many itineraries combine a visit here with time in that historic walled town.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Mljet .

Cycle or Walk Veliko Jezero

Rent a bike or follow the shoreline path around the larger lake through pine forest; a full loop takes a few hours, though shorter stretches suit tighter shore time.

Boat to the Benedictine Monastery

A short ferry from the lakeshore lands at the tiny islet holding a former monastery and church, one of the park's most photographed spots—worth the modest ticket and wait for the crossing.

Swim in the Saltwater Lakes

The sheltered, clear water of Malo or Veliko Jezero stays calm and mild, making it an easy, refreshing break between walks—bring a towel since changing facilities are minimal.
