About the Port
Klaipeda traces its origins to 1252, when Teutonic Knights raised the castle of Memelburg at the mouth of the Dane River, founding what remains Lithuania's sole seaport. The city divides into two distinct halves: a New Town of practical infrastructure and Klaipeda University, and an Old Town of narrow lanes and half-timbered houses that reward a slow walk from the pier. Maritime tradition runs deep here, celebrated through tall ship regattas and the city's Sea Museum.
Folklore infuses the streets, too, with whimsical statues tucked into Old Town corners and the carved wooden figures of Witches' Hill nearby, depicting Lithuanian fairy tales. Just beyond the city, the Curonian Spit offers a striking landscape of dunes and pine forest along the Baltic coast. Compact and walkable, Klaipeda rewards visitors who linger in its historic core before venturing further afield.
