Isla Bartolome

A volcanic islet in the Galápagos crowned by the iconic Pinnacle Rock, prized for otherworldly views and snorkeling among penguins

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Isla Bartolomé rises from the Galápagos archipelago as a compact volcanic landscape of spatter cones, lava fields, and rust-colored formations. A wooden boardwalk and staircase lead to its summit, rewarding the climb with a sweeping view over Pinnacle Rock, the island's signature spire, and the surrounding bay. The setting feels almost lunar, shaped by centuries of eruption and erosion with little vegetation to soften the terrain.

Beneath the surface, the cove offers some of the region's best snorkeling, where Galápagos penguins, sea lions, and reef fish move through clear volcanic waters. The island has no dock, so visits arrive by tender, landing directly on its shores. Isla Bartolomé remains uninhabited and undeveloped, preserved as part of the Galápagos National Park and valued as one of the archipelago's most photographed and ecologically distinctive stops.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Isla Bartolome.

Climb to the Summit Overlook

A 30-40 minute boardwalk staircase of about 372 steps switchbacks up the volcanic cone to a viewpoint over Pinnacle Rock and twin bays. Go early for cooler temperatures and the clearest light for photos.

Snorkel with Galápagos Penguins

The cove beside Pinnacle Rock is one of the few places to swim alongside Galápagos penguins as they dart through clear water with sea lions and reef fish. Wetsuits are worth requesting since the current can run cool.

Beach-Walk the Tender Landing

Step ashore by tender onto the small sandy beach beneath the rock formations for a close-up look at the stark lava terrain before or after the summit hike. Reef sharks are sometimes visible from the shallows.
