Ilulissat

A colorful Arctic town on Disko Bay where towering icebergs calve from one of the world's most active glaciers

All Cruise Ports

About the Port

Ilulissat, Greenland's third-largest town, takes its name from the Inuit word for iceberg, an apt title for a place shadowed by the massive Ilulissat Icefjord. This UNESCO World Heritage site marks the mouth of the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, one of the fastest-moving glaciers on Earth, which calves enormous icebergs into Disko Bay year-round. The result is a seascape of drifting ice sculptures visible from the waterfront and surrounding hillsides.

Brightly painted wooden houses line the compact town center, within easy walking distance of the harbor, alongside sled dogs, fish-drying racks, and small museums tracing Greenlandic and polar-exploration history. A network of boardwalk trails leads from town toward the Icefjord's edge, offering close views of the ice without disturbing the fragile tundra. Ilulissat serves as a natural gateway for exploring Disko Bay by boat, where the scale and silence of the ice make a lasting impression.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Ilulissat.

Hike the Icefjord Boardwalk

Follow the marked boardwalk trail from town to Sermermiut, roughly a 45-minute walk each way, for close-up views of towering icebergs jammed at the fjord mouth.

Take a Disko Bay Boat Tour

Small boats weave among drifting icebergs for an up-close scale that photos from shore can't capture; book ahead, as space is limited and popular.

Wander the Old Town Harbor

Stroll past colorful wooden houses, sled dogs, and fish-drying racks near the harbor, then duck into a small museum on polar exploration history.
