Gardner Bay

A pristine white-sand beach on Española Island where sea lions, mockingbirds, and nesting seabirds show no fear of visitors

About the Port

Gardner Bay lies along the northeastern shore of Española, the oldest and southernmost island in the Galápagos archipelago. Landings here are by wet landing directly onto a stretch of fine white coral sand, where a resident colony of sea lions lounges undisturbed by passing visitors. The surrounding waters and inlets are calm and clear, making this one of the archipelago's most rewarding spots for swimming and snorkeling alongside marine life.

Éspañola's isolation has fostered unique wildlife found nowhere else, including nesting sea turtles and, seasonally, the waved albatross that breeds almost exclusively on this island. Endemic mockingbirds and marine iguanas are commonly seen along the shoreline. Because the beach landing involves shallow surf, sturdy water shoes are worth packing, and the lack of shade rewards early arrival before the sun climbs high over the bay.

Pavlus Recommendations

How our planners would spend a day in Gardner Bay.

Snorkel with Sea Lions

Slip into the calm, clear inlets to swim alongside curious sea lions and colorful reef fish. Bring your own mask or rent one aboard; the water here is among the archipelago's best for visibility.

Photograph the Sea Lion Colony

Walk the white coral-sand beach where sea lions doze in loose piles, often within a few feet of the shoreline. Arrive early for soft light and cooler temperatures before the sun climbs high.

Spot Waved Albatross and Marine Iguanas

Scan the rocky edges of the bay for endemic marine iguanas and, in breeding months, the waved albatross that nests almost nowhere else on earth. Keep a respectful distance and let a naturalist guide point out nesting sites.
