Elephant Island rises from the Southern Ocean at the edge of the South Shetland Islands, its jagged peaks and tidewater glaciers rarely touched by visitors. The island earned its place in exploration history in 1916, when members of Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition sheltered on its narrow, storm-battered shore at Point Wild for months awaiting rescue.
