About the Port
Deshaies sits on the northwest shores of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe's lush and mountainous leeward island, where colorful Creole cottages line a deep, well-sheltered bay long favored by fishermen and, legend has it, passing pirates. The village keeps an unhurried rhythm, with a small waterfront, local markets, and French-Caribbean kitchens serving fresh seafood within easy walking distance of the pier.
Just beyond the village, the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies showcases tropical plants and free-roaming birds across landscaped hillside grounds. Nearby Grande Anse Beach stretches for more than half a mile along golden sand backed by coconut palms, offering calm waters well suited to swimming and snorkeling. Together, the setting captures the quieter, greener side of Guadeloupe, a fitting counterpoint to the island's volcanic interior and its dominant peak, La Soufrière.
