About the Port
Blaye sits on the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux, a small river town best known for its formidable citadel. Built under the direction of the military engineer Vauban in the seventeenth century, the fortress was designed to guard the river approach to Bordeaux and today forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation shared with other Vauban strongholds. Ramparts and bastions overlook the wide estuary, offering sweeping views across the water toward the vineyards on the opposite bank.
The historic citadel stands within easy walking distance of the pier, making it a natural focus for a visit ashore. Beyond its walls, the surrounding countryside rewards exploration by bicycle or car, with quiet lanes tracing the riverbank toward neighboring villages.
