About the Port
Bernkastel unfolds along a bend in the Moselle River, its half-timbered houses leaning over a market square whose oldest buildings date to the 13th century. Above town, the ruins of Landshut Castle crown a wooded hill, offering sweeping views over the river valley; excavations there in 2012 uncovered remains from the fourth and fifth centuries, adding deeper layers to the site's long history. The old town sits within easy walking distance of the riverside, making it simple to explore on foot.
The surrounding hillsides form the heart of the Moselle wine region, prized for centuries for their steep, slate-soiled vineyards. Just outside town lies Bernkasteler Doctor, one of Germany's most celebrated Riesling sites, its terraced rows visible from the riverbank. Between the timbered architecture, the castle ruins, and the vineyards pressing close to the water, Bernkastel offers a compact, walkable introduction to the Moselle's blend of history and winemaking tradition.
