About the Port
Encircled by fortified ramparts on the banks of the Rhône, Avignon rose to prominence in the 14th century when a string of popes ruled Christendom from here rather than Rome. Their legacy survives in the imposing Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose vast halls and courtyards still dominate the old town's skyline. Cobbled lanes, lively squares, and the famous half-bridge of Pont Saint-Bénézet reward unhurried wandering, while a youthful arts scene keeps the historic center feeling very much alive.
The old town sits within easy walking distance of the pier, making the papal palace and surrounding streets simple to explore on foot. Avignon also serves as a natural base for reaching greater Provence, with the Rhône Valley's vineyards to the north and lavender-covered hills and historic villages spreading south, offering a fitting introduction to the region's landscapes and rural charm.
