About the Port
Spread across a cluster of islands on Norway's Atlantic coast, Alesund greets arriving travelers with turreted facades, wrought-iron balconies, and towers touched with motifs from Nordic mythology. A catastrophic fire in 1904 leveled the old wooden town, and its swift rebuilding in Art Nouveau style left a remarkably unified architectural ensemble, much of it raised within just a few years. The result is often called one of the best-preserved collections of period design in Europe.
The compact center is easily explored on foot from the pier, its streets threading past canals, harborside quays, and a still-active fishing port. A climb to the Aksla viewpoint above town rewards with sweeping views over the islands and surrounding fjords. Alesund also serves as a natural gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway's most celebrated fjord landscapes, making it a fitting first or final stop for those tracing the region's dramatic coastline.
